By Light Professional IT Services LLC is committed to sustainable business practices that preserve natural resources, contribute to the well-being of our employees, and foster positive engagement with the communities in which we live and work. We recognize that sustainable business practices reduce By Light’s operating costs and ultimately reduce the costs of the products and services we deliver to our customers. Our goal is to create a culture of efficiency and corporate social responsibility which includes environmental stewardship, employee wellness, and community and vendor partnerships. By Light’s policies, procedures, and programs reinforce our commitment to sustainability.
Due to limited emissions from a small number of vehicles and purchased electricity, By Light follows the EPA’s “low emitter” of greenhouse gas (GHG) reporting guidance. By Light conducted an inventory of GHG emissions for the calendar year 2021 (January 1 – December 31, 2021). Our Scope 1 emissions for this period were 11 CO2-E (carbon dioxide equivalent) and our Scope 2 emissions for location-based and market-based inventory this period were 422.
Targets
We support the Federal Sustainability Plan, which commits the U.S. government to net-zero greenhouse gas emissions procurement by 2050. By Light sets clearly defined goals to reduce GHG emissions within a given timeframe.
Near-term Target: By Light seeks a 25% reduction in absolute Scope 1 (direct emissions) and Scope 2 (indirect emissions) emissions by 2030, compared to our 2020 emissions (base year).
Long-term Target: By Light’s goal is net-zero Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2050.
By Light Professional IT Services LLC is the Offeror and reports for “self.” We report our GHG Emissions at the level of the corporate entity that holds the Alliant 2 Master Contract.
Our Quality Management System (QMS) creates a framework for compliance and continuous improvement in everything we do as a company – including sustainability. By Light’s Quality Team encourages every employee to actively contribute to sustainability practices and improve our climate change risk posture. We do this by continuously evaluating risk, participating in applicable forums, and working directly with customers and vendors to ensure every risk possible is identified and mitigation steps taken to minimize or eliminate those risks.
By Light, as part of our overall corporate governance, actively identifies, manages, mitigates and reports on climate risk. By Light created and maintains a Corporate Climate Change Risk Management Plan which describes our approach to managing climate change risk as part of our overall NIST-800-37 Risk Management Framework. Our overall goal is to lease only climate-resilient By Light Centers able to effectively carry out By Light objectives and to provide design and engineering solutions that always account for climate risk inherently in each solution.
By Light has established policies and practices that conserve energy and natural resources. We have in-office plastic and paper recycling stations at all of our corporate facilities. We reuse packaging, paper and other materials wherever possible. We have reduced our carbon footprint in the following ways:
By Light’s Quality Team will continue to monitor federal, state, and local laws, as well as Government directives regarding climate change, and adapt our internal Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to ensure we remain in compliance. By Light pledges to engage with concerned stakeholders and each of our customers in order to disclose strategies for identifying, mitigating, managing and reporting risks related to climate change.
Our employees’ safety and well-being is of utmost importance. By Light’s corporate safety, wellness and training policies, programs and practices establish By Light as an employer of choice and are key to maintaining a sustainable workforce. We offer several employee benefits that contribute to our sustainability goals including teleworking, gyms and yoga classes, a monthly health and wellness e-Newsletter campaign, e-recycling events, wellness activities rewards program, and excellent health care benefits.
By Light has chosen locations outside of flood zones and in close proximity to the Government facilities. This affords our employees an opportunity to report for work during inclement weather and during other conditions where they may be unable to safely reach the work location. By Light ensures connectivity for employees to By Light systems and to the internet by moving critical services to Cloud Hosted environments. By Light has a Continuity of Operations Plan (COOP) and pre-positioned IT capability in protected data centers. By Light has clear policies and guidelines for employees in cases of inclement weather and other emergencies as well as a quarterly tested recall roster to ensure we are aware of the status of all employees whenever emergencies occur.
Beyond the safety of our personnel, the most significant risk of climate change is to our ability to meet contractual and legal deliverables. Production of deliverables, prototyping, production, kitting and other functions could be disrupted by inclement weather. Our geographically diverse workforce with employees located in more 20+ states and countries near posts/camps/stations/bases, as opposed to significant concentrations of personnel in large metro areas, ensures geographically specific environmental impacts (floods, tornados, hurricanes, etc.) do not adversely impact the entire workforce.
Continued reliance on and expansion of cloud hosting and exercise of COOP capabilities ensures access to work products and allows for the timely transmission of deliverables to customers in accordance with contract requirements.
By Light values being a good neighbor in the communities where we live and work. Our employee Diversity & Inclusion Committee is chartered with fostering a welcoming, vibrant, and innovative workforce. Volunteering is encouraged and By Light organizes opportunities to do so. We support community sustainability and wellness projects and events such as local recycling projects and American Red Cross Blood Drives.
